Our sports performance staff is compromised of highly certified coaches and personal trainers. All SportXcel sports performance staff coaches and personal trainers are certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, degreed in Exercise Science and have experience in high school, collegiate and professional athletics.
Craig Keyes, MD – Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Keyes is a physician, board certified in both Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. A lifelong advocate of health and well-being, he is best known to Coloradans as the former Chief Executive Officer of United Healthcare of Colorado, where he was awarded “Power Broker of the Year in Healthcare” from the Denver Business Journal in 2006. Prior to his work in Colorado, he served as CEO of United Healthcare of New York.
Dr. Keyes received his undergraduate and medical degrees, both with Honors, at the University of Wisconsin, and completed his internship and residency at Columbia University and Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. He also holds a Masters in Business Administration from Columbia University School of Business. A native of Wisconsin, he currently resides in Denver and New York City.
Erik Phillips, MS, ATC-L, NASM PES, CES – General Manager, SVP, Program Research and Development
Erik Phillips manages SportXcel’s product development and exercise research, and advises on all performance enhancement programming. He works closely with the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) on development of performance enhancement and corrective exercise protocols. SportXcel’s sports performance staff bases its exercise programming on NASM’s research and its Optimum Performance Training (OPT) protocols.
Erik has spent more than a decade in conditioning professional athletes, most recently as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and Assistant Athletic Trainer with the NBA Phoenix Suns. Prior to that, he spent more than six years with the Denver Nuggets as the Assistant Athletic Trainer and also assisted with the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche minor league call-ups during the Stanley Cup playoffs.
He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), the Colorado Athletic Trainers Association (CATA) and National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). Additionally, he is certified as a Performance Enhancement Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist and received a Master’s degree in Injury Prevention and Performance Enhancement from California University of Pennsylvania in 2005. He has also served as an adjunct faculty member for the A.T. Still University College of Health Sciences and was recently the Medical Director for the 2012 Women’s Basketball Final Four held in Denver. Erik attended the 2012 London Olympics as an Athletic Trainer for Amr Seoud, an Egyptian 100 & 200 meter qualifier, and assisted the Egyptian National Track & Field team with everyday training needs.
A 1998 graduate of Colorado State University, Phillips served as a student athletic trainer for four years at CSU, working with the men’s basketball, football, track and softball squads. Phillips was a three-year varsity letter winner for Rams’ track and cross country teams and participated in the WAC championships each year between 1993-96. He participated in cross country, basketball and track at Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth, CO. Erik has three kids Joey, Jackson and Aleena.
Justin Carter MS, NASM PES – Director of Marketing
Justin was born and raised in Galena, IL where he developed a strong Midwestern work ethic. He was an all-conference selection in both football and baseball his junior and senior seasons. After graduating from Galena High School Justin attended Loras College where he was a 4 year member of the football team, and earned his Bachelors Degree in Sport Science with an emphasis in Coaching. It didn’t take him long to make the decision to move to Colorado after graduation.
Justin worked at SportXcel from 2009-2011 and then with the SportXcel Youth Fitness Foundation in the Denver Public schools from 2011-2012. He returns to SportXcel after recently completing his Masters Degree in Sport Management and Marketing from CALU. In his new role Justin will look to strengthen and develop our partnerships with local youth organizations, club teams, and nearby companies. He will also focus on expanding our school fitness programs.
Justin holds a National Academy of Sports Medicine Performance Enhancement Specialist Certification. He is an avid outdoors man and thoroughly enjoys spending his time in the mountains.
Jared Cooper, NASM PES – Performance Coach
Jared graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelors of Science in Health and Exercise Science with a focus on Health Promotion. While in Fort Collins, he assisted in training the football team at Rocky Mountain High School. The two athletes he worked with exclusively went on to crack the 800 and 1000 pound club. Jared went to Colorado Springs to intern at Carmichael Training Systems, an endurance coaching and training facility developed for cyclists. He became the assistant manager of their training club and also started coaching competitive cyclists. During his spare time he coached middle school boys basketball and football.
Jared has lived in Colorado the past 15 years and competed in basketball and football while attending Chatfield Senior High School. His senior year he received First-Team All Jefferson County for his position at Wide Receiver. He was also a member of the 2001 State Championship Football Team at Chatfield. Now, Jared enjoys racing road and mountains bikes as well as being an outdoorsman: climbing 14ers, hiking, trail running, camping, snowboarding, snowshoeing and anything else he sets his mind to.
Jared believes there is an athlete in everyone and that if you dedicate the hours anyone can accomplish their wildest dreams. His wildest dreams consist of climbing Mount Everest, participating in Ride the Divide, Race Across America, The Colorado Trail Race and many other epic endurance events.
Scott Eberhardt, HFS, FMS – Performance Coach
Scott was born and raised in Truckee Ca, with being surrounded with an active lifestyle Scott played varsity soccer all four years of his high school career. Winning the State championship his Senior year, where he was awarded the State MVP.
Scott Attended College at Saint Mary’s College of California where he
received his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology Health and Human Performance.While at Saint Mary’s Scott played division one soccer. Helping his team reach the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history his senior year. While playing soccer he worked closely with the strength and conditioning coach helping in assisting in the development of the soccer teams strength and conditioning program. In the off season of soccer he worked with club soccer players on speed, agility and technical skills to help players advance to the next level. Having a number of his athletes go on and play at division one and division two programs throughout the country.
Scott is now a sponsored mountain bike racer and understands that hard work pays off and will help you reach any goal you set your mind too.
Albert Sandoval, CSCS – Baseball Performance Correspondent
Al Sandoval is a sports performance coach specializing in individual and group training. Al has five years of experience working with professional athletes and one year of collegiate experience. Al is in his 2nd season with the Anaheim Angels as a Strength & Conditioning Coach after serving four seasons with the Colorado Rockies. He has been through four full-seasons in the Rockies minor league system spending one season with the Rookie Ball team in Casper, WY and spent three seasons in Tulsa, OK with the Rockies Double-A affiliate.
Before his professional experiences Sandoval helped design and implement the strength and conditioning program currently used by the Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball Team.
A 2008 Colorado State University-Pueblo graduate, Sandoval was an assistant S&C Coach for the baseball team in 2008. Sandoval was a three year varsity-letter winner for the Thunderwolves baseball team participating in two NCAA Division II Baseball West Regional’s in 2006-07. Al is a Colorado native who graduated from Pueblo East High School and was a four year varsity baseball letter winner as an Eagle.
