SportXcel School Programs Frequently Asked Questions
1.PE Costs more than we can afford. What can you do about that?
Answer: SportXcel provides more fitness for less money; the high efficiency of our program delivers results in less time than is currently employed in more traditional programs. Whether we teach your PE teacher how to be more efficient and effective (handling more students and delivering results in less time), or we provide the training directly, you actually spend less than you do now.
2.What exactly is your program content and structure? Do you work with a single model, and how much is the program customized for the school?
Answer: The SportXcel program is a research-based program of physical activity that uses limited equipment and is led by a specially trained coach certified through the NASM and SportXcel. The model of delivering that program is tailored to the needs of a school – we can provide the specially trained coach, or we can train your staff (usually your PE teacher). We can conduct the program in blocks of time that suit your needs. In some instances, we deliver the training in hour-long sessions similar to academic subjects, and in others, the training is parsed out in much shorter intervals. The logistics of program delivery are a function of your needs and school schedule.
3.We can’t spare time for PE; we need to use all our time for reading and math. How much time do you need and is it worth it to take time away from other subjects?
Answer: SportXcel doesn’t teach reading or math. BUT, research shows that physically fit kids perform at 0.63GPA points higher than their less fit counterparts. Our program lifts the performance barrier so that the academic work done by your teachers is reflected in kids’ grades. And in just 90 minutes per week (rather than an hour a day), the investment is more than worth it to remove barriers to increased learning for the remaining hours of the schoolday.
4.We don’t have a fancy gymnasium or even space for working out. How can you deal with that?
Answer: The SportXcel program doesn’t need a fancy gym. The limited equipment is included in the cost of the program, and still is substantially less than just the staffing costs of traditional programs. The research-based program is effectively deployed in outdoor fields, in cafeterias, hallways, and even classrooms.
5.How does the SportXcel program address the new Colorado State Department of Education Comprehensive Health and Physical Education Standards?
Answer: The Colorado State Department of Education revised its standards effective December, 2009. There are now 4 standards; the SportXcel program is fully compliant with all four of the new standards.
6.How much does the SportXcel program cost?
Answer: The cost is based on several factors, including the structure of the school-day (is this for one or two sessions in the morning at the start of the day, or staffing classes all day long), the level of support required (is there a teacher in place, or do we need to provide staff), the location (travel/accommodation), the size of the school. But we can help find a solution that is more efficient, more effective, and less costly than the current plan.
7.Where do schools get the funding? Are there grants available?
Answer: Schools can use their current operating funds for PE, and in some instances, the operating costs have been substantially defrayed by grants from several organizations supporting health, education and child development. As we work to develop the solution for your school, we can also discuss possible grant opportunities for your school.

“I have been doing the SportXcel Training Program for eight months and just got my Fitnessgram scores for the year. My teachers said I had the best improvement score in the entire class. I improved my PACER run from 22 laps to 35 laps, my curl-ups from 12 to 29 and my arm-hang from 5 seconds to 10 seconds. I know I improved so much because I worked with the SportXcel program and also kept doing exercises at home like the trainers told me to do. I love SportXcel and can’t wait for them to come back to my school next year.”

“As the Physical Education Coordinator for the Denver Public Schools system of 157 schools serving 75,000 children, I’m pleased to support a research-based fitness and conditioning program such as this. It is remarkable productive- the program that I witnessed provides for a percent of time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) that approaches 95%, far above other programs”
- Eric Larson, Denver Public Schools
"As a startup school that focuses on health and wellness as a key contributing factor to academic success and self-development, SportXcel has proven itself to represent the absolute best that is out there - in terms of body knowledge, fitness assessment, and a commitment to active learning not only in a gym setting, but from a holistic world view of how schools can integrate movement throughout it's day. The Girls Athletic Leadership Schools is a proud partner."

“Every one of our 600 middle school students has participated in the SportXcel Fitness Program. I have no doubt this program has elevated the general fitness and conditioning levels of the vast majority of our kids. While we're pleased to see improvements in our Fitnessgram performance testing, it's equally exciting to see how engaged the children become in the Sportxcel routines. I sense, at times, the kids don't fully appreciate they're working out. I fully endorse the program and believe many would benefit from its expansion.”
- Warren Hanson, Cresthill Middle School, Douglas County
“I have had the opportunity to work with SportXcel and their instructors over the past two school years. The SportXcel Youth Fitness Foundation program is unique in its ability to take a group of 60+ junior high students and keep them not only engaged, but physically active throughout the class period. I have students who typically refrain from engaging in daily classroom activities that seem to work harder whenever we conduct the SportXcel training program. ”
