How long have you worked out at SportXcel?
January 15 2012

What makes SportXcel different than other gyms?
Each work out is a group session, however the trainers individualize the work out for each of the participants. They push us when we need to be, and modify when appropriate, based on each individual. They are all very positive, encouraging and supportive of each of our individual goals and progress. The training and workouts seem like they could be more intimidating than another gym but the trainers and SportXcel environment are the exact opposite and very welcoming of all participants, all levels of fitness, and differences in goals.
Each training session includes a wide variety of activities developed to help us improve on total body health, strength, and balance. There are several adult classes offered each day and although each class trains the same body parts, each time slot is unique. It is great to have the different time options each day, but we all seem to have found our favorite class. The SportXcel environment is very positive and healthy. The gym has attracted a right mix of clients who span a wide age range and ability range, who are enthusiastic about working out and supportive of one another.
The gym also includes individual personal training, specific sports focused training, team training, therapy services and more. The SportXcel staff are trained and committed to assisting when needed to ensure healthy clients.

Do you train at SportXcel for events (e.g. Skiing, 10ks, soccer, hiking, etc.)? If so, how has training at SportXcel helped you perform better in those activities?
I am not training at SportXcel for an event or other athletic activity. However, I am in better shape than I have been in many years, so if I wanted to participate in another athletic activity I would be prepared. The SportXcel workouts have helped me with important regular day activities. I am stronger, and healthier. I am able to sleep better, eat better and can manage the work stress more effectively. And let’s face it, who doesn’t want to look better in their jeans?
Any other information or comments may be added below! I have met a lot of great people at SportXcel and rely on my workouts for an important balance to a healthy lifestyle.

Dawn has been a leader of the 6pm class since she started in 2012!  Her dedication to a healthy lifestyle has helped her achieve great gains while training at SportXcel.  Dawn has been instrumental in getting United Health Care to support the annual Gobblethon at SportXcel.  She has also been known to organize happy hours for the SportXcel clients!  Keep Training Like A Boss!

SportXcel Welcomes Two New Coaches!

SportXcel Adds Two New Coaches to Performance Staff

SportXcel is pleased to announce the hiring of two performance coaches.  Matias Gutknecht and Brent “Benny” Tollar have joined the SportXcel team.  Both Matias and Benny come to SportXcel with a wealth of experience as coaches and trainers.

matiasMatias, comes to SportXcel as a recent graduate from the National Personal Training Institute.  While at NPTI he earned his NASM CPT & PES and NSCA CSCS certifications.  Prior to his time at NPTI, Matias earned a BA in German from Colorado College, was a backcountry ski guide with Crested Butte Mountain Guides, a raft guide in the Gunnison valley, and a competitive skier with the Vail development team.  In addition to his time coaching at SportXcel, he is a head coach with the “Kids & Teens That Tri” organization and is training to become a professional triathlete at the half and full Ironman distances.  He has worked with some of the top triathlon coaches in the country and utilizes his experience as an athlete and his education to provide a “no stone unturned” approach to coaching and training. Matias commented “I am thrilled to be part of an incredible performance center in Sportxcel that is staffed by the very best and most qualified personal trainers and coaches! Their approach to fitness and wellness as well as sports performance and athletic development mirrors my own philosophy and views and as such, it is a perfect fit for me.”

brentwebBenny joins SportXcel after recently moving to the front range from Steamboat Springs.  During his time in Steamboat, Benny was the Director of Steamboat Youth Hockey, the head high school hockey coach, and a personal trainer.  Benny grew up in Minnesota, “The State of Hockey”, where he spent more time on the ice than he did off of it.  He has been a hockey coach for over 10 years and has been training athletes for the past 6 years.  A Level 4 Coach and an instructor for USA Hockey, Benny has lead coaching clinics specializing in dryland conditioning and also hosted high altitude camps in the mountains of Steamboat Springs. Brent has trained players of all ages and abilities. He’s worked with players from youth ages, high school, USHL, AHL, ECHL, all the way up to players in the NHL.  Benny had this to say about joining the staff at SportXcel “SportXcel is the type of training center I’ve always wanted to be a part of.  I’m looking forward to meeting the local hockey community and making SportXcel the trusted source for hockey training on the front range.”

Erik Phillips, SportXcel GM/Owner, on hiring Mathias and Benny.  “I couldn’t be happier to announce the hiring of these two great coaches.  Not only are they great coaches, they have great character and share the same training philosophy as the other coaches on the performance staff at SportXcel.  My goal with SportXcel has always been to be a trusted source for people to reach their fitness/performance goals and to have the most highly qualified coaches in the state.  As we continue to grow, we know that every addition to the team will ultimately be a key to the success of the business.  I’m confident that Matias and Brent will play a vital role in the future of SportXcel. “

I’m proud to sponsor SportXcel. You all are changing lives for the better!

Since rejoining SportXcel in February John has lost over 30lbs and brings great energy to the 10am Majors+ class each day. John attends SportXcel up to 7 times per week…we only have 6 days of classes…that means he comes two classes on certain days of the week! Rather than using the excuse of not having time, John has made fitness a priority and has experienced amazing results because of it! We’re happy to be a part of your fitness journey, keep it up John!

Rocky Mountain Thunder Softball- Rollin’ in 2014

The Rocky Mountain Thunder softball teams are off to a fast start in 2014. The RMT spent their off-season training at SportXcel to develop team speed and increase their strength. Their efforts in the gym are very apparent on the diamond this spring. They won their first two tournaments of the season in dominating fashion. They have have stolen over 100 basses (90 more bases than their opponents) and out scored their opponents 121-17. Rocky Mountain Thunder pitcher Ellie Walters threw a no hitter in a recent game against the TCR Impact. The Thunder won the game 14-1, the opposing teams run was scored on a walk and fielding error. “We had a ton of extra base hits enabling us to score more (because of our increased speed)” said Coach Pat Racanelli.

Brady Baer Sets Colorado Scoring Record

bradybaerhoopsBrady Baer, a senior at Akron High School, just set the record as all time leading scorer in Colorado High School Basketball history.  Brady Baer has trained using SportXcel’s basketball performance program for the past three seasons.  His dedication to basketball both on and off the court has paid off tremendously.  Brady set the record in the quarterfinal game against Meeker at CSU-Pueblo’s Massari Arena.

Right now Brady’s main focus is helping his team win the Colorado class 2A state championship.  When asked how he felt about setting the scoring title he said “This means a lot, but I think I will reflect on it a little more after the state tournament. Now, I’m just focused on winning. That’s the No. 1 thing on my mind right now.”

Brady will admit that he is excited to play basketball at the college level, wherever that may be.  Despite being the most prolific scorer in the history of high school basketball in Colorado, Brady hasn’t yet signed to play at the next level.  He has talked with Chadron (Neb.) State, CSU-Pueblo, and Colorado Mesa University but will focus on making that decision after the state tournament.
