My SportXcel Journey to Landing the Job of my Dreams

For me, the decision to train at SportXcel has been nothing short of life changing. My journey with the trainers and staff at this facility began about 5 months ago, but my dream of being a firefighter started almost 5 years earlier. Throughout the past 5 years, I have gone through numerous physical agility tests and combat challenges while testing for different departments, but I always felt like something was missing. It quickly became apparent that, if I wanted to be at the top and land the job of my dreams, something would have to change. That change, for me, was SportXcel.

About 5 months ago, I learned that I would be getting the opportunity to test with a local fire department and that the competition was going to be stiff. I knew that being a 30 year old guy who was out of shape, with stiff joints and old soccer injuries was not going to work in my favor…so it was time to enlist some help. When I walked into SportXcel for my first workout, I walked into a motivational, yet demanding atmosphere, where intense workouts were guided by supportive and professional trainers. These guys (and girls) were legit.

Soon after joining, I jumped at the chance to start training one-on-one with one of their trainers, Rob, who had experience training at all levels, from kids to professional athletes. After my first week of taking the Adult Fitness Classes and training with Rob, I knew that I was part of something great. The specialized Adult Fitness Classes offered individual attention to every client which, I believe, is an absolute formula for success and, for me, the addition of Rob was the boost I needed to reach the next level.

It has now been 5 months since I started training with SportXcel and the results I have seen, in my opinion, would have been unachievable anywhere else. I have lost 35 lbs, now run at least 3.5 miles every morning and have seen dramatic improvements in my endurance and strength. And, to top it all off, I breezed through the fire department’s physical agility test and just received my final offer of employment to start my new career as a Firefighter-Paramedic.

I firmly believe that if you have a goal in mind, whether it’s to become a firefighter or to just improve your fitness, and are willing to put in the effort, SportXcel can provide you with the tools and support that will make that goal a reality.

My next adventure: SheRox Triathlon

I am a goal oriented person. I like trying new challenges. I can always count on Sportxcel to get me ready for whatever new adventure I set my sites on. In October, Deb, Mary Ann (co-worker) and I just finished the Denver Rock ‘N Roll Half Marathon. We started talking about our next competition. I thought it would be fun to train for a triathlon. Mary Ann mentioned the SheRox triathlon and planned on doing it again in 2010.  The SheRox is a women only sprint distance triathlon. So, Deb started taking swimming lessons in November.  Rob Van Valkenburgh helped me designed a program that would blend with my existing training at Sportxcel and the new block triathlete training. I started training January 1, 2011.
